Brain energy

I just listened to the book Brain Energy that ties mitochondria and metabolism to mental health. I would be interested in your take on this very important topic of diet and mental health. Specifically, keto diet is mentioned a number of times. Lots of science in the book … similar to Outlive - which I loved!!

Passive stretching as a method to lower blood glucose levels

Would a stretching routine benefit a pre-diabetic or diabetic person to help use excess circulating blood glucose independent of insulin? As a health coach who works with pre-diabetics, encouraging someone completely sedentary to start being physically active can be very challenging. For some, the sensation of effort from cardiovascular and resistance activities can take a while to get used to. Usually, the sensation of stretching is much more pleasurable, and I encourage beginning physical activity with a morning and evening stretching routine, mostly to build consistency and relieve tense or tight muscles. You mentioned NOS and SDMA and ADMA in your last AMA #258 and I was reading this study: Passive stretch regulates skeletal muscle glucose uptake independent of nitric oxide synthase, https://journals.physiology.org/doi/full/10.1152/japplphysiol.00368.2018?rfr_dat=cr_pub++0pubmed&url_ver=Z39.88-2003&rfr_id=ori%3Arid%3Acrossref.org#B35 It mentions that passive stretching does increase insulin independent uptake but does not increase NOS. now I am curious as to what role NOS play in muscle metabolic or performance adaptions?

Root Cause and Non-Hormonal Treatments of Hypothyroidism

Watched the whiteboard talk on thyroid and it was extremely helpful - but seeking more information on root cause and non-hormonal treatments. How can those with hypothyroidism treat it without the use of Rx drugs (if that's even possible)? What are the side effects of going on levothyroxin and are there natural ways to kick start my thyroid?

Dexa scan

I recently had a dexa scan done and was wondering how do they compare the results to your peer group. For example I was rated c plus for body composition. I understand that is compared to people in my age bracket, but are these people who also had dexa scans? If that is there case I would think that it is not comparing me to the general population. I would think that people taking dexa scans are more likely to engage in healthy habits. Is dexa accurate on detecting visceral fat from the subcutaneous fat around the midsection? I had read a study that it might not be that accurate. Thank you

eGFR based on Cystatin C

Is the eGFR based on Cystatin C reported when ordering a Cystatin C blood test or is there a formula that you have to use to calculate the eGFR?
