I like sauna bathing as much as anyone, but before investing in a finnish-style dry sauna: A dose-response benefit is claimed, mostly based on Laukannen et al's studies of Finnish sauna users (4-7 times/week reduces relativ risk of several maladies, as compared to 1 time/week). But if sauna-use is that healthy, wouldn't you expect the mean living age of the total Finnish population to be higher than in comparable countries/societies, where sauna use is less widespread than in Finland? Which doesn't seem to be the case.
I have recently started to do steady LT2 training on my way to work. Using a HR monitor to gauge the zone. Think I'm hitting it about right. What I would like to ask is there additional benefits in doing on my way home as well? I understand there is most likely a benefit but is it double the benefit of one session that day or is it too much stress on the mitochondria to gain much difference?
Time for a 20-30 minute PCSK9 update? Please share Peter's experience with PCSK9 - in his patients as well as himself. I just added Repatha to my prior Rosuvastain 40mg and Ezetimibe 10. I am a cholesterol hyperabsorber (Boston Diagnostics Cholesterol Balance test). Thanks!
Peter mentioned he knows what wattage to set for his zone 2 training session. Does that wattage change gradually overtime as he gets into better shape or perhaps goes through a period where he is in worse shape? if a person relatively new to exercise is beginning a training program, I would expect the wattage output for zone two to gradually increase as that person gets into better shape over the course of several months to a year. Is this correct? How do you determine when to change the wattage? Is this why you measure your lactate at the end of each workout, because it informs what wattage you set your next workout to?
Peter, you presented a nice list of questions to ask a primary care physician to find a good one who emphasizes prevention and is forward-thinking. Recently, I've tried to find a new PCP and mostly heard lots of 'not accepting new patients'. Any advice on how to locate a good PCP who concentrates on prevention - websites, other tools? How about concierge care, any opinion on whether it is a good route and if so, how to find a good one? Thanks!
