Podcast guest suggestion: Bruce Rogers (on using HRV DFA-a1 for aerobic threshold estimation)

This is related to the AMA questions "HRV guided zone 2 training (≤LT1-Lactate Threshold 1)" and "Is Zone 2 really a "zone"?" I would like to suggest you have Bruce Rogers on the show to talk about his method of detecting lactate threshold 1 using HRV DFA-alpha1 analysis. This allows you to see in real-time where you cross your aerobic threshold using a Polar H-series heart rate monitor and a mobile app. Here are some links to his site and a couple podcasts he has done: http://www.muscleoxygentraining.com/2021/01/dfa-a1-and-exercise-intensity-faq.html https://x3training.com/endurance-innovation-87-bruce-rogers-on-hrv-estimation-of-aerobic-threshold/ https://x3training.com/endurance-innovation-97-bruce-rogers-with-updates-to-dfa-a1-analysis-and-garmin-metrics/

Paradoxical findings in ALS

Do you have any insights on the seemingly paradoxical finding of how certain factors that you would consider good for preventing chronic diseases appear to be a risk factor for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)? 1. In animal models of ALS, caloric restriction resulted in a decreased lifespan, and rapamycin treatment caused increased motor neuron degeneration. 2. Patients with hyperlipidemia have an increased life expectancy. 3. There is an inverse risk factor association between ALS and type 2 diabetes/obesity. 4. Exercise is a risk factor for ALS. Of course, there is some controversy on some of these points and I'd be happy to send the appropriate references, but many of these findings are highly cited and are in good journals. Given that ALS is the third most common neurodegenerative disease, these findings seem very important to understand mechanistically if we want to extend lifespan/healthspan. P.S., I can't thank you enough for all the work that you and your team has done. I have learned so much from all of your podcasts and I would be lying if I said that it didn't affect how I conduct my research as a Ph.D. student. Also, please interview an ALS specialist!

Sarcopenia

What are thoughts on the importance of resistance training to offset age related muscle loss? Is resistance training more potent than aerobic exercise for longevity? Is there a public perception that we do not need to practice “physical hygiene” to increase the probability we stay healthy? Why can’t we get people to view the regular work it takes to keep the neuromusculoskeletal system healthy similar to taking care of their teeth?

Data driven fasting

What are your thoughts on data driven fasting for fat loss and/or remission of diabetes/prediabetes? In other words using blood glucose values to determine when you eat (Marty Kendall Optimizing Nutrition)?

COVID-19 Long Term Cognitive Effects

Can you speak on the studies that have shown an association between COVID-19 and cognitive decline and loss of grey matter?
